Tampa Bay Water Awarded More Than $21 Million
Tampa Bay Water Secures Over $21 Million in PFAS Class Action Settlement
The Florida Water Quality Association (FWQA) is pleased to share significant news regarding a recent legal victory that will benefit water quality efforts in Florida. Tampa Bay Water has been awarded an estimated $21 million in a class action lawsuit against manufacturers of PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals.”
Tampa Bay Water joined this lawsuit in 2020 to proactively protect its members and citizens from potential financial impacts associated with the sampling, testing, and treatment of these pervasive chemicals. The settlement, which includes contributions from 3M Company and E.I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company, is part of a larger collective agreement totaling billions of dollars aimed at assisting public water systems across the nation in addressing PFAS contamination.
This significant award will support ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water. Tampa Bay Water has been actively testing its regional drinking water supply for PFAS since July 2023 and is currently undertaking a Water Quality Study to develop treatment recommendations for identified contamination.
This outcome represents a crucial step in holding manufacturers accountable and safeguarding water resources for the communities we serve.
